‘This Is What We Have Been Hired To Do’: Whoopi Goldberg Returns To ‘The View’ After Suspension

“The View” host Whoopi Goldberg returned to the table Monday after a two-week suspension for claiming that the Holocaust was “not about race,” but rather “about man’s inhumanity to man.”

Goldberg addressed her suspension briefly at the beginning of Monday’s broadcast, saying that she had learned from her time away from the show but promising that she would continue to address the “tough questions” because that was part of the job.

“Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to ‘The View’ — and yes, I am back,” she began.

“We missed you,” co-host Joy Behar replied.

“And I missed you all too,” Goldberg agreed. “I got to tell you, there’s something kind of marvelous about being on a show like this because we are ‘The View,’ and this is what we do, and sometimes we don’t do it as elegantly as we could, and sometimes – but it’s five minutes to get in important information about topics.”

“And that’s what we try to do every day, and I want to thank everybody who reached out while I was away, and I’m telling you,” Goldberg continued. “People reached out from places that made me go, wait, wait. What? Really? Okay!”

“And it was amazing, and I listened to everything everybody had to say, and I was very grateful, and I hope it keeps all the important conversations happening because we’re going to keep having tough conversations.”

“Yeah,” co-host Sunny Hostin agreed.

“And in part, because this is what we have been hired to do, and it’s not always pretty as I said, and it’s not always as other people would like to hear, but it is an honor to sit at this table and be able to have these conversations because they’re important,” Goldberg concluded. “They’re important to us as a nation, and to us more so as a human entity. So happy Valentine’s Day, y’all.”

CNN Chief Media Correspondent Brian Stelter noted that Goldberg avoided addressing the issue head-on, tweeting, “Whoopi Goldberg back on @TheView after a two-week suspension. No direct mention of the controversy. ‘I want to thank everybody who reached out while I was away… I listened… We’re going to keep having tough conversations. In part because that’s what we’ve been hired to do.’”

Goldberg’s suspension came about as the result of a discussion about a school district that was reportedly attempting to ban the graphic novel “Maus,” which is about the Holocaust – and despite immediate pushback from her co-hosts, the longtime host insisted repeatedly that the Holocaust had not actually been “about race.”

As The Daily Wire reported:

“If we’re going to do this, let’s be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn’t about race. No. It’s not about race,” Goldberg said.

“They considered Jews a different race,” Joy Behar pushed back.

“It’s not about race. It’s not about race,” Goldberg insisted.

“What is it about?” Behar asked.

“It’s about man’s inhumanity to man. That’s what it’s about,” Goldberg replied.

“But it’s about white supremacy,” Navarro objected. “It’s about going after Jews and gypsies —”

“But it’s not about —” Goldberg interrupted. “These are two white groups of people. How do we —”

“They came after black people too,” Behar pointed out, noting that the Nazis had not considered Jews to be “white” either.

“But you’re missing the point. You’re missing the point. The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley,” Goldberg was insistent. “Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you are black or white because black, white, Jews, Italians, everybody eats each other.”
