French President Emmanuel Macron said he’s willing to work with Russian President Vladimir Putin to develop new security architecture in Europe.

Following a five-hour bilateral meeting on Monday, Macron and Putin said they are looking at several new initiatives that can ease Russia’s concerns about the presence of NATO troops in Eastern Europe.

Macron also said Russia may not invade Ukraine as dialogue continues. The French president added, Russia is a huge part of Europe and talks are vital.

“I think we can agree on this with President Putin, Russia is European,” said Macron. “He who believes in Europe must be able to work with Russia to find the ways and means to build the future with Europe and Europeans. Is it an easy task? No. But was Europe built through painless initiatives and with immediate results? No.”

Putin also told Macron Russia will undertake every effort to ensure security in Europe and prevent any conflicts moving forward. Meanwhile, Joe Biden is trying to increase international support against Russia if it does invade Ukraine.
